Obesity and Self-Esteem

Obesity can result to low self-esteem. Having low self-esteem can lead to obesity. This is a vicious cycle.

Self-esteem is vital in a person’s life. If one has low self- esteem, he does not have confidence in himself or to anything in his life. He does things that can affect him as a person or his health. He turns to food and tends to overeat. In the long run, this person becomes overweight or obese.

On the other hand, obese people often suffer from bullying and teasing by their friends. And sadly, these individuals are also harassed and discriminated by family members even in the confines of their own home. These cause not only stress and depression but low self- esteem as well. Obese people compare themselves to non-overweight persons and consider themselves inferior. Several studies prove that a stressed person or child tends to eat more, and gain more weight. Obesity and a low self-esteem can clearly destroy a person’s life if given a chance.

Here are some warning signs that an obese individual is experiencing low self-esteem:

  • When one admits that he is considering hurting himself and others

  • When the individual looks lonely, sad, angry or withdrawn

  • When a person has few peers

  • When he overeats and appears obsessed with food

  • Inability to sleep or maintain a healthy sleeping pattern

  • Reluctance to join social activities, gatherings or parties

These key points do not automatically say one has low- self-esteem, although these can be indicative that an emotional problem is present. If the low self-esteem is obesity-related, it is advisable to manage the extra pounds, see a doctor or professional and seek counseling. A physical threat to self or others should be taken seriously.
