The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is one of the 24-member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties, founded in 1937 as an independent, non-profit organization. Because all surgeons pass written and oral examinations, the American Board of Surgery grants the surgeons' certification after they have completed a minimum of 5 years of surgical training before the examination.
