| Getting Ready for Gastric Band Surgery
In the United States , there are 2 bariatric procedures approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), one is gastric bypass and the other is gastric banding, a malasborbative and a restrictive procedure respectively, and the most practiced nationwide with a minimally invasive technology that reduces scarring and pain.
Gastric band surgery, consisting of a silicone band, which is strapped around the upper portion of the stomach to create a small stomach pouch, which is a procedure, performed for the treatment of obesity. During the first appointment, you will be interviewed to determine if you meet all the criteria for gastric band surgery.
If the answer is affirmative, you will be medically evaluated and instructed about all that the procedure involves, but particularly preparing yourself for gastric band surgery, reducing the consumption of food, particularly near or the day when the operation is scheduled. Doctors will recommend limiting the intake of calories by 25%.
Start an exercise workout, walk at least 30 minutes a day, or do any other pleasant activity, such as jogging, biking or swimming. Act as if the procedure was already performed. A few days before your gastric band surgery, make an appointment with the surgeon and express your concerns.
The surgeon will give you all the additional information about the procedure that you ask. He will also help you to prepare with some specific instructions that your doctor cannot provide. The day before your surgery, eat breakfast as usual but only drink clear liquids for the rest of the day.
Water, clear fruit or citrus juice, tea, coffee, gelatin and broth are all considered "clear fluids". Continue with your medication until the moment of your gastric band surgery, and after midnight do not eat or drink anything, where anything means NOTHING, unless your medical staff has recommended some fluid or water.
In the morning get ready, the day of your gastric band surgery has come and you will be taken to a room and wait for your procedure. Nurses will apply an intravenous injection in your arm. Depending on your evaluation, you can receive antibiotics, sedatives and any other medication if your medical staff considers it necessary.
Immediately after this preparation, you will be taken to the surgery room and the gastric band surgery will be performed according to the method of your preference, or the most recommended at the moment of discussing your options between open and laparoscopic procedure.
