| Helpful Risk Information about Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
Laparoscopic gastric banding is recommended for people who need weight reduction due to medical conditions related to overweight or obesity. It is indicated as a weight loss procedure for people who have a BMI of 40 or above. Folks with BMI of 35 may also be candidates for laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, particularly if their obesity coexists with other medical concerns and life-threatening illnesses.
Although laparoscopic gastric banding is generally safe and not as traumatic as other gastric surgeries, it does have some contraindications, risks and possible complications. Any patient considering this option must be aware of the following:
Laparoscopic gastric banding, such as the LAP-BAND System is not a recommended option for children and geriatric patients. These particular populations are at a risk for poorer results and improper healing. Therefore, the surgery can only be done on adult patients who are free from conditions that can worsen with surgery. This gastric surgery is not meant for folks who are unwilling to modify their diet and lifestyle. Pregnant women are generally discouraged from undergoing this procedure until they have given birth.
A major consideration for laparoscopic gastric banding is that the silicone implant stays in the body for a very long time. It may be prone to natural wear and tear, so patients must expect explants (removal of the implant) or replacement of the band from time to time. When a patient becomes severely ill because of poor nutrition or unnatural digestive processes, the implanted bands may have to be deflated.
