WLS produces positive changes to one’s fertility. Women with infertility problems due to weight issues can actually start ovulating after weight loss surgery. Metabolic and reproductive abnormalities are addressed and may directly benefit women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Wait for 2 years before getting pregnant. Pregnancy is not an issue after WLS, malnutrition is. Post surgery, the body goes to several changes which may include rapid weightloss. Getting pregnant too early may be dangerous to both mother and baby. Pregnancy at this time may result to maternal and fetal malnutrition and low birth weight or small for gestational age babies.

During pregnancy, you need to monitor your nutrient intake. Once pregnant, a post-WLS patient needs to consult a nutritionist who is knowledgeable about gastric surgeries to make sure you and your baby are getting enough nutrients to sustain and carry your pregnancy to term.

The risk of pregnancy complications is lowered but it doesn’t mean that it goes away. Your chances of getting gestational diabetes for example are slim after surgery but there is a small percentage of acquiring it especially when one is not careful. It is important to inform your OB-Gyne about your WLS so she can take extra precautions in taking care of your health.

A Caesarian delivery is more likely because of the factors and risks involved.
